In 2004 Unahi
Mindanao commenced the first experimental permaculture farm
in Misamis Oriental in the Philippines.
The focus of the project is on soil restoration, housing,
animal buildings, livestock, water conservation. sloping agricultural
land technology (Slope contouring) and green manure cropping.
Micro-organism technology is a key feature of the project,
improving and replenishing the microbial activity in the soil.
Animals like pigs and chickens were chosen for their, great
source of manure, and edibility.
All fertilizer used is organic, non chemical and completely
natural.
Permaculture is a design system for creating sustainable
human environments. It is a philosophy and an approach to
land use which weaves together micro-climate annual and perennial
plants, animals, soils, water management and human needs into
intricately connected productive communities. The word itself
comes from Permanent agriculture and permanent culture. On
one level permaculture deals with plants, animals, buildings,
and infrastructures (water, energy, and communications.) However,
it is not about these elements themselves but rather the relationship
we can create between them by the way we place them in the
landscape.
Permaculture is based on the observation of natural systems,
and modern scientific and technological knowledge
Weather we are producers or consumers of food, our future
is linked to its source---the earths diminishing natural recourses.
Permaculture focuses on positive solutions: how we can design
sustainable human settlements and take control of our lives
again.
Unlike other modern agricultural systems, permaculture has
been placed squarely on the shoulders of ecology - the study
of inter-relationships and interdependence of living things
and their environment. The result is a new way of sustaining
and enriching life without environmental and social degradation.
